Initiated by Guy Bernard Reichmann, “out-of-office” is a series of events presented in the Marc Schimmel Multipurpose Gallery. Focused on time-based practices such as video, dance, and performance, and in line with the multidisciplinary mission of the Center, “out-of-office” was conceived to nurture the domestic creative scene.
The performance Dread consists of two interwoven parts, developed by multidisciplinary artist Rafi Balbirsky and performance artist Noa Reshef. The first part, by Balbirsky, features car wiper motors that have been transformed into musical instruments, generating sound in a desperate attempt to reawaken, alongside carnivorous plants that produce sonic output due to their internal bioelectrical activity. The second part, by Reshef, follows the mythology of the goddess N, a controversial figure associated with dark events, and reenacts certain rituals that are attributed to her, such as sacrificial offerings and visits to the underworld.
The shared environment created by Balbirsky and Reshef draws from the aesthetics of Spook Shows – American stage performances from the early 20th century that used illusions and visual effects to create live horror scenes in darkened theaters. Through the use of apocalyptic archetypes drawn from both past and future, Dread explores the relationship between fear, seduction, and entertainment
